The terms listed below are commonly encountered when working with Bands and Booking Agents.




Anniversary Dance - Used to honor married couples, the anniversary dance invites all married couples to the dance floor. The DJ then calls out anniversaries (starting with the bride and groom) eliminating the youngest couples of the crowd. The last couple standing is traditionally honored with a gift or some sort of recognition from the bride and groom in honor of their lasting marriage.
Booking Agent - A person or company who represents and schedules performances for one or multiple performing groups.
Bouquet Toss - The bouquet, a symbol of fertility, is traditionally tossed to a crowd of single women, to further fertility. Whoever catches the bouquet is supposed to be the next to be married.
Emcee - Usually a DJ or band leader, this master of ceremonies helps direct guests throughout an event, announcing and explaining events as they happen.
Father-Daughter Dance - A modern tradition, this dance is usuallly performed to highlight the special relationship between the bride and her father.
First Dance - This dance is usually reserved for the bride and groom only and is the first such dance of their married life.
Garter Toss - Like the bouquet, the garter is tossed to a crowd of eligible bachelors, the winner of which is supposed to be the next to be married.
Instrumentation - The specific instrument(s) represented and played by a live soloist or ensemble.
International Special Events Society (ISES) - The International Special Events Society (ISES) was founded in 1987 to foster enlightened performance through education while promoting ethical conduct. ISES works to join professionals to focus on the "event as a whole" rather than its individual parts. ISES has grown to involve over 4,000 members active in 41 chapters throughout the world. Mother-Son Dance - A modern tradition, this dance is usuallly performed to highlight the special relationship between the groom and her mother.
Music Type - In this category, type refers to the instrumentation or musical delivery method generally represented by the performer or ensemble.
National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) - NACE is the oldest and largest professional association that addresses all aspects of the catering industry. Through Chapter involvement, members have an opportunity to work on community service projects and voice opinions about issues that affect them locally and nationally. Play List - A list of songs a musician is requested or required to play during a performance.
Power - Depending on the size of the band and its technical requirements, you may need to discuss the power and electrical capabilities of your reception site. This is especially of concern for outdoor or tented events where a generator might be necessary.
Rehearsal - This is, just as it sounds, an actual run through of your wedding ceremony. It typically takes place the evening before the wedding.
Song List - A list of songs that a soloist or ensemble knows or is able to perform. Also, referred to as repertoire.
Staging - Depending on the band, some performers require a raised platform to perform. See contract requirements for specific needs and/or requests.
Wedding Party Dance - This dance is traditionally used to help fill the dance floor and calls for all members of the wedding party to dance.
